WILD GROWN PLANTS

Medicinal plants have been known to man since long time ago. It is possible that even before the appearance of man on earth, used by animals, of course instinctively in the function of healing. Information about the use of medicinal properties of herbs in the ancient past can be obtained from ethnographic and archeological sources and written writings. Due to geographical, geological and geomorphological characteristics, as well as natural conditions (climate, soil, etc.), a large number of different plant species grow in BiH. Over 3000 taxa of vascular flora have been observed. The number of types of medicinal and aromatic herbs is impossible to determine, but depending on the way the term is understood, the number of medicinal herbs again ranges from 300-700 depending on the author. According to some indicators, about 250-300 species are in widespread use, which means that less than 10% of the vascular flora is in use. The fact is that irrational, uncontrolled and unprofessional collection has led to a reduction in resources or the complete disappearance of a number of plant species.

The company, “Ljbilje” doo Ljubinje deals with the purchase of over 100 species of wild medicinal, aromatic herbs on the principle of sustainable collection. The company educates its pickers and certifies them annually. Harvesters have basic botanical knowledge (the ability to identify a species and to know its biology and ecology: how it reproduces, how fast it grows, how long it reaches the stage where it is best to harvest, what habitats to look for, etc.), they can estimate population size ( resources) in the field; be aware of the maximum quantities that they may collect to recover resources; are familiar with species whose collection is prohibited or very restricted; as well as hygiene and health procedures.
